Choosing a Pet Memorial as a Gift: What to Consider

When someone we love loses a pet, it can be hard to know what to say, let alone what to give them.

If you've found this article, chances are someone you care about has lost a pet and you want to do something that actually means something.

That's a lovely instinct. But buying a memorial for someone else can feel a little daunting too.

You don't want to get it wrong. You don't want to choose something that's too personal, too soon, or simply not something they'd have chosen for themselves.

And with pet loss, there's another layer to consider. We know how deeply people grieve their pets, but the outside world doesn't always understand that. A thoughtful memorial can be a beautiful way of saying, I know how much they meant to you. I haven't forgotten them either.

Because when you're giving something to someone who is grieving, how you give it can matter just as much as what you give.

TIMING MATTERS MORE THAN YOU MIGHT THINK

The days immediately after a pet passes can be incredibly raw.

The house feels different, because it is. Their bowls, beds and toys are still sitting where they left them. Grief can arrive in waves, and sometimes even talking about how to remember them feels like more than someone can manage.

That's worth keeping in mind when you're thinking about a memorial as a gift.

A beautiful memorial might be something they'll treasure for years, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're ready to receive it straight away.

If the loss is very recent, you might be better off being there in the simpler ways first. Drop off some food. Send a message. Sit with them. Help with something practical. Let them know you're thinking about them.

Then, a little further down the track, a memorial can become something different. Instead of being another reminder of their loss, it can become a way of remembering the life they shared.

There's no exact timeframe for that. Everyone grieves differently. But if you're buying a memorial as a gift, it's worth asking yourself whether you're choosing it for where they are now, or because you feel like you need to give something straight away.

Sometimes waiting is the more thoughtful choice.

FROM-PHOTO PET MEMORIALS

If you know the person well enough to have a favourite photo of their pet, or you're comfortable asking them for one, a custom from-photo memorial can be an incredibly personal gift.

Rather than choosing a generic dog, cat or breed design, the memorial is individually made for their actual pet.

Their awkward little sit. Their favourite toy in their mouth.

The small things their family knows by heart.

And that's one of the things we love about photo-based memorials. You're not simply giving someone a memorial of a dog or a cat. You're giving them something that was made specifically for their family.

Of course, there's a little more to consider with a gift like this.

You'll need a suitable photo, and you'll need to be reasonably confident that a custom memorial is something the person would want. If you're unsure, it's perfectly okay to ask them, even if that takes a little of the surprise away.

Our from-photo memorials can be made in a range of formats, including garden stakes and wall art, and each one is custom designed in-house by our graphic designer.

BREED-BASED MEMORIALS - PERSONAL WITHOUT BEING QUITE SO SPECIFIC

Although our custom from-photo pieces are where MCC began, they aren’t right for everyone.

Maybe you don't have a photo. Maybe you don't know the person well enough to ask for one. Or maybe you simply think they'd prefer something a little more understated.

That's where a personalised breed-based memorial can be a lovely option.

You can choose a design that reflects their pet's breed and personalise it with their name, dates or a short phrase that means something to them.

It's still personal, but it doesn't require you to know all the details of how they'd want their pet remembered.

And for someone who is still quite early in their grief, that can sometimes be a better fit. It can sit in a garden or on a wall as a simple reminder of the pet they loved, without being quite as specific as a memorial made directly from a photograph.

SOMETIMES THE BEST GIFT IS LETTING THEM CHOOSE

This is probably the option we'd suggest considering if you're unsure.

After years of making memorials for families, we've learned that there's no single way people want to remember their pets.

Some people want a statement piece.

Some want something small and subtle.

Some know exactly which photograph they want to use.

Others aren't ready to look through photos yet.

And some people simply want to choose for themselves.

That's where a pet memorial gift card can make a lot of sense.

It means you can still give them something meaningful without having to decide what that memorial should look like on their behalf.

And perhaps most importantly, they can do it when they're ready.

A gift card can be particularly useful if you don't have access to a good photo, you're unsure what they'd like, or you're buying for someone whose taste you don't know well enough to choose a memorial yourself.

It's not the less personal option. Sometimes, giving someone the choice is the more personal thing to do.

THE PART THAT MATTERS MOST

When you give someone a pet memorial, you're doing more than giving them an object.

You're recognising that their pet was important and losing them matters.

Sometimes that's what someone needs most, especially when the rest of the world has already moved on.

You don't need to find the perfect words, and you don't need to make their grief better.

You can simply say: I know how much they meant to you.

And help them remember them in a way that feels right for them.
